California and Texas have more things in common than people seem to realize. They’re both huge states with a variety of terrains. Both states have mountains, rivers, deserts and sea water. COST OF LIVING COMPARISON
California is a lovely state, but one of the least affordable for a resident or a business owner. MERIC (Missouri Economic Research and Information Center) computes a cost of living index for each state by averaging the indices of the cities and metropolitan areas in that state. According to MERIC’s calculations of all cost of living factors, Texas ranks 14th in the country for affordability. In contrast, California ranks 48th. California also has one of the highest corporate tax rates in the country. This is on top of state taxes. While Texas has no state income tax at all, California has a marginal state income tax of 12.3%.
UNEMPLOYMENT
Texas isn’t ranked too highly on unemployment but California is ranked much worse according to the labor department. As of August, 2021, Texas was ranked 35 for all states plus DC, with an unemployment rate of 5.9 percent. California was ranked at 50, with an unemployment rate of 7.5 percent. That’s a big difference, and a driving factor for migration from California to Texas.
