Accepting a job is a big decision. Accepting a job requiring relocation is an even bigger one. If you’re having a hard time making your choice, here are some questions you can ask yourself that may give you some clarity.
How Much Do You Enjoy This Location?
If you’ve never been to this city, or you haven’t been there in many years, you should spend some time there as soon as possible. Imagine moving to a new city and discovering that you hate it. If you have been there recently, how does it compare to where you live now? If you could zap over there and keep your job and your house, would you?
Is This New Job or Position Worth the Move?
Some jobs or promotions are very much worth a cross-country move. Others aren’t worth a local move. If this is a promotion, make sure you understand the new responsibilities you’ll have. If this is a new hire, learn everything you can about the company — its culture, its benefits, its reputation. Check the company out at GlassDoor.com and other websites. If you know someone with the company, ask lots of questions. One important question is turnover. Some companies make their employees happy and they stay for many years. Other companies don’t keep employees for more than a year on average, which seems hard to believe but is true. If you love the city, that’s not so bad, but if the new city isn’t a better fit for you, you just went through a lot of trouble for a short-term job.
Will The Company Pay For the Move?
Some companies have very generous relocation packages, covering your moving service, and maybe a bonus to cover other moving costs like early lease termination, deposit, down payment, etc. Don’t be afraid to ask for these details, because you need to know your budget. In some cases, a move can require a lot of out of pocket costs.
How Affordable Is This New Location?
Cost of living for different parts of the US varies greatly. San Francisco and New York City are very expensive in terms of rent and home values. Taxes are pretty high, too. Unless you love those places or get a great pay raise, this may be an unaffordable move. But if you’re moving to Texas from either of those cities, you’re about to have a much more affordable life.
